Understanding the transmission frame and its MSC part is key to understanding the CIF frame. The transmission frame represents how the antenna transmits bits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MSC, part of the transmission frame, consists of 72 times a modulation cycle of (D)QPSK modulation. Remember that a modulation cycle happens simultaneously on the 1536 carriers and that the (D)QPSK modulation uses symbols of 2 bits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So we repeat that one modulation cycle sends 1536 carriers x 2 bits = <strong>3072 bits<\/strong> into the aether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(<strong>Aether<\/strong> is a physically non-existing material, a word used when people could not understand which medium transported light. It was considered the 5th element, \u201cquintessence,\u201d in medieval times, a material filling the whole universe).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MSC consists of 72 consecutive modulation cycles carrying audio bits. Dividing the MSC by 4 delivers CIFs of 72\/4 = <strong>18 modulation cycles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/localdab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/FIC.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1388\" height=\"696\" data-id=\"1742\" src=\"https:\/\/localdab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/FIC.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/localdab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/FIC.jpg 1388w, https:\/\/localdab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/FIC-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/localdab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/FIC-1024x513.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/localdab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/FIC-768x385.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1388px) 100vw, 1388px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Figure 1 &#8211; division of the MSC into 4 CIF frames.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How many bits can a CIF transmit into the air?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eighteen modulation cycles multiplied by 3072 bits per modulation cycle result in a total of <strong>55269<\/strong> <strong>bits<\/strong> per CIF.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now we quantized the CIF as a unit of <strong>55269 bits.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us look into the CIF timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Transmission frame repeats every 96 ms, so each sub-part of the transmission frame is repeated every 96 ms. It is also applicable to the MSC. It should be clear that dividing the MSC into 4 CIFs can only result in CIFs of <strong>24 ms<\/strong> duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember, <strong>24 ms<\/strong> is a very important time lap in DAB(+) audio.
