{"id":2104,"date":"2024-12-14T09:37:43","date_gmt":"2024-12-14T08:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/localdab.org\/?page_id=2104"},"modified":"2024-12-15T08:46:14","modified_gmt":"2024-12-15T07:46:14","slug":"access-units","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/localdab.org\/index.php\/glossary\/a-d\/access-units\/","title":{"rendered":"Access Units"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An &#8220;Access Unit&#8221; is a general concept in audio coding theory used across various codecs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For optimal audio quality, the <strong>input<\/strong> of an audio codec must be linear digital time samples. By this, we mean original \u201chigh-quality\u201d time samples (PCM) such as a WAV format or other <strong>non-lossless<\/strong> coding format. This is also why cascaded coding (codec after codec) does not deliver acceptable quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audio codec will transform a <strong>fixed number<\/strong> of these time samples into an <strong>equal group<\/strong> of <strong>frequency samples<\/strong> by using a mathematic algorithm (Fourier transform).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advantage of frequency frames is that they can be compared to the curve of the human ear. &nbsp;The ear is not equally sensitive to all frequencies, so we can delete redundant information that the human ear will not hear. We call this process <strong>perceptual coding <\/strong>(removing frequency information that will not be heard as a result of the human ear mechanism).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afterwards, we will encode the remaining frequency sample to reduce the number of bits (for instance, reduce the sample rate of lower frequency bands).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, a lossless (Huffman) coding will reduce the bits of the resulting frames a second time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the result is a new <strong>output frame<\/strong> with fewer bits, usually up to 1\/10 of the original audio input. These frames are transported as bit-compressed audio at a bit rate <strong>much less<\/strong> than the original linear time frames at the input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These frames are Access Units or <strong>AU\u2019s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, coded HE-AAC and MP3 audio frames are <strong>AU\u2019s<\/strong>. The decoder can decode each <strong>AU<\/strong> into linear time samples (audio).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The linear decoder output shall contain less information than the original input to the encoder.
