TII = Transmitter Identification Information
The TII can (but does not have to) be transmitted by a DAB transmitter. Nevertheless, almost all DAB transmitters use this TII identification.
The TII consists of two numbers: the ‘main id’ (0 to 69) and the ‘sub id’ (0 to 23). With these two numbers, a code can be composed that identifies a DAB transmitter.
Note that this is only the identification of the transmitter itself. Therefore, this identification also has nothing to do with the MUX or the individual content. The TII can therefore only be set to the transmitter.
The TII is used by almost no consumer DAB receiver. After all, this information is of little use to the listener. However, it can offer benefits to broadcasters and DAB operators.
Thanks to the TII, it is possible to check which stations are received in certain locations. With a database, station identification can be linked to technical data such as station site coordinates, power, etc… . So ideal to monitor (for example) an SFN DAB+ mux.
With SDR software such as QIRX, transmitter sites can even be displayed on a map. The distances between transmitters and the distance between receiver and transmitters can also be read on the screen.
